What is a traumatic stress incident (TSI)?
A traumatic stress incident (TSI) is a critically disturbing or distressing incident that occurs in a person's life causing immense strain on self and often even others. TSIs can happen at any point in a person's life. The symptom can be sporadic, unpredictable and if not managed uncontrollable which can lead to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Traumatic events affect survivors, friends and relatives of victims who have been involved. They can also impact on people who have seen the event firsthand.
*Examples of TSIs are 1) loss of a loved one- spouse, significant other, child, sibling, grand parent, close friend, colleague, etc., 2) major Illness- cancer, heart attack, stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, chronic diseases, etc, 3) major Injury- paralysis, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), burns, loss of limb or function of limb, etc, 4) sexual, physical and/or mental abuse, 5) being involved in or witnessing a traumatic event, 6) divorce, 7) substance abuse.

What are symptoms of a TSI?
Cognitive Symptoms can include* 1) confusion, 2) poor decision making, 3) lack of organization, 4) making mistakes, 5) disorientation, 6) poor problem solving, 7) poor concentration, 8) heightened or lowered alertness, 9) difficulty identifying familiar objects or people, 10) memory problems
· Behavioral symptoms can include* 1) noticeable change in behavior/personality, 2) increased sick days, late arrivals, early departures, 3) intense anger, 4) avoidance or withdrawal, 5) low self-esteem, 6) emotional outbursts, 7) temporary loss or increase of appetite, 8) excessive alcohol and/or drug consumption, 9)inability to rest, pacing, 10) lethargy, no energy

The symptoms can be sporadic and unpredictable. If not managed, it can become uncontrollable leading to post traumatic stress disorder. It can also have an impact on people who have witnessed the event first hand.
Why should we be concerned about employees with TSIs?
A TSI can impede a person's ability to work. It can impact health, performance and even peers.
. Workplace stress costs US employers an estimated $200 billion per year in absenteeism, lower productivity, staff turnover, workers compensation, medical insurance and other stress-related expenses.
. Sixty percent of lost workdays each year can be attributed to stress. In addition, an estimated 75% to 90% of visits to health care providers are due to stress related conditions, costing employers in increased health care costs.
· The Gallup Poll has shown that disengaged workers costs the US economy $370 billion per year.
· The Family Center, an Edmonton organization that provides employee assistance programs, notes that 75% of employees dealing with grief or loss say their reduced ability to concentrate affected them well beyond their leave. Fifty percent of trades people affected by a death reported a higher incidence of injury in the days and weeks following the death.
How can coaching help?
Coaching assists employees in reconnecting internally as they respond to demands externally. It assists them in finding methods for building a foundation of resiliency so no matter what obstacles they encounter so they have the capacity to move beyond them.
· Providing a coach to an employee with a TSI demonstrates that the organization is invested in the employee and wants to help them succeed. It increases employee engagement.
· Coaching provides payback for the employer. A Manchester Consulting Group study of Fortune 100 executives, the Economic Times reports "coaching resulted in a ROI of almost six times the program cost as well as a 77% improvement in relationships, 67 percent improvement in teamwork, 61% improvement in job satisfaction and 48% improvement in quality."
· Additionally, a study of Fortune 500 telecommunications companies by MatrixGlobal found executive coaching resulted in a 529% ROI. The CIPD concludes "coaching is not just perceived as a nice-to-have intervention."
